Why do helicopter parents feel the need to micromanage their children?

In an attempt to shield their kids from failure, disappointment, or injury, helicopter parents micromanage.  Parents think parents can guarantee their child’s success and avoid bad results by being involved in every detail.  This drive is frequently fueled by social pressure, fear, or anxiety.  Though well-meaning, this over-involvement can backfire by impairing children’s self-esteem and capacity to handle difficulties on their own.
